Jazz on the Move: Dinah Washington at Frist Center For The Visual Arts

The Nashville Jazz Workshop continues the eighth season of the popular jazz performance and education series Jazz on the Move with a special presentation on the music of Dinah Washington, featuring vocalist Connye Florance. The event will take place at Blair Turner Recital Hall on the Vanderbilt Campus.

Each installment of Jazz on the Move features a lecture and performance highlighting a major figure or period in jazz history. Presented by Nashville’s top jazz artist/educators, the series offers audiences world class music as well as an opportunity to learn more about jazz.

Sunday, September 14 - Music of Dinah Washington

Dinah Washington - Dinah Washington was a singer and pianist noted for her gospel-inspired delivery and string of top 10 rhythm-and-blues hits. She was primarily a jazz singer, however, who sang for several years with the Lionel Hampton band and recorded with legends of jazz including Clifford Brown, Clark Terry, Cannonball Adderley, and Ben Webster. In 1959, she had her first top ten pop hit, with a version of "What a Diff'rence a Day Made", which made Number 4 on the US pop chart. Her band at that time included arranger Belford Hendricks, with Kenny Burrell (guitar), Joe Zawinul (piano), and Panama Francis (drums).

Connye Florance - NJW Faculty member Connye Florance is an award-winning vocalist (BET Jazz Vocalist Of The Year, 2000) and dynamic actress who has career credits which include stage, studio and screen performances. She has headlined regional and area jazz festivals with her award winning ensemble, performing alongside such notables as Randy Brecker, Maynard Ferguson and Beegie Adair. She teaches vocal performance classes at NJW from beginner to advanced.

This year's series is presented with support from Caterpillar Financial Services, Peter and Anne Neff, and the Frist Foundation.

The program is at 3:00 pm and is free and open to the public.
