The Nashville Jazz Workshop and the Frist Center for the Visual Arts announce the ninth season of the popular jazz performance and education series, Jazz on the Move. Each installment features a lecture and performance highlighting a major figure or period in jazz history. Presented by Nashville’s top jazz artist/educators, the series offers audiences world class music as well as an opportunity to learn more about jazz. The series begins Sunday, January 25 at 3:00 pm, and features a tribute to the Modern Jazz Quartet.

The programs take place on a series of Sunday afternoons, and are free and open to the public. All performances are at 3:00 pm in the auditorium at the Frist Center for the Visual Arts, 919 Broadway, Nashville, Tenn. The first presentation in this year's series is:

January 25 - Music of the Modern Jazz Quartet
Presented by Bruce Dudley

"The Modern Jazz Quartet - A Retrospective" featuring Bruce Dudley, piano; Chris Norton, percussion; Roger Spencer, bass; and Todd London, percussion.

The Modern Jazz Quartet was formed in 1952 by pianist John Lewis and vibraphonist Milt Jackson. With Lewis' contrapuntal sense of musical composition and Jackson's blues and bebop based improvisations, the MJQ succeeded in bringing a new sensitivity to jazz, bridging the gulf between jazz and classical music and creating a genre of music called Third Stream Music (a term that was coined by noted composer/musicologist Gunther Schuller). Jazz pianist and NJW & Belmont University faculty member Bruce Dudley has transcribed from recordings several pieces that were conceived and recorded by the Modern Jazz Quartet. The quartet, all Belmont Faculty members, will perform "Concorde," "The Golden Striker," "Vendome," "La Ronde," and "Django," among other pieces made famous by the Modern Jazz Quartet.
