January 26 - A Tribute to Clifford Brown/Max Roach Quintet
Presented by Jamey Simmons
Clifford Brown was one of the greatest trumpet players in jazz history. His brief career in the 1950's was a bridge between the bebop and hard bop periods. In the period between 1953 and his untimely death in 1956, at the age of 26, he made many recordings which have become jazz classics. And none have been more influential than the recordings of the quintet he co-led with drummer Max Roach. Trumpet master and educator Jamey Simmons will discuss the life and work of this gifted artist, who has influenced all subsequent generations of trumpet players. Together with an all-star band, Jamey will demonstrate the music of this timeless quintet, including jazz classics such as Joy Spring, Daahoud, and others. Joining Jamey for the lecture/performance will be Chris Brown (drums), Denis Solee (saxophone), Joe Davidian (piano), and Jim Ferguson (bass).
Future presentations in the series:
February 23 - Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers
Presented by Marcus Finnie
March 23 - Miles Davis "Kind of Blue"
Presented by Don Aliquo and Jamey Simmons
April 27- Carmen McRae
Presented by Sandra Dudley
