Jazz on the Move: the Music of Billie Holiday at Nashville Jazz Workshop

The Nashville Jazz Workshop continues the ninth season of the popular jazz performance and education series Jazz on the Move with a special presentation on the music of Billie Holiday, featuring vocalist Connye Florance. The event will take place at the Frist Center for the Visual Arts on Sunday, Feb. 22.

Sunday, February 22 - Music of Billie Holiday

Billie Holiday - Few names in jazz or popular music are as recognizable, or evoke as passionate a response as the legendary vocalist Billie Holiday. She was a true artist of her day and rose as a social phenomenon in the 1950s. Her soulful, unique singing voice and her ability to boldly turn any material that she confronted into her own music made her a superstar of her time. Today, Holiday is remembered for her masterpieces, creativity and vivacity, as many of Holiday’s songs are as well known today as they were decades ago. Holiday’s poignant voice is still considered to be one of the greatest jazz voices of all time.

Connye Florance - NJW Faculty member Connye Florance is an award-winning vocalist (BET Jazz Vocalist Of The Year, 2000) and dynamic actress who has career credits which include stage, studio and screen performances. She has headlined regional and area jazz festivals with her award winning ensemble, performing alongside such notables as Randy Brecker, Maynard Ferguson and Beegie Adair. She teaches vocal performance classes at NJW from beginner to advanced.

Joining Connye for this performance will be Cord Martin (saxophone), Kevin Madill (piano), Roger Spencer (bass), and Nioshi Jackson (drums).

This year's series is presented with support from Caterpillar Financial Services, and Peter and Anne Neff.

The program is at 3:00 pm and is free and open to the public. Admission includes FREE admission to the Frist galleries and discounted parking.
