Jazz On The Move: Tribute To Charlie Christian at Nashville Jazz Workshop

The Nashville Jazz Workshop and the Frist Center for the Visual Arts announce the TENTH season of the popular jazz performance and education series, Jazz on the Move. Each installment features a lecture and performance highlighting a major figure or period in jazz history. Presented by Nashville’s top jazz artist/educators, the series offers audiences world class music as well as an opportunity to learn more about jazz.

March 20 - Tribute to Charlie Christian - Presented by guitarist Andy Reiss.

Charlie Christian is considered the first modern jazz guitarist. Working for only a short time in the late 1930s and 1940s before his untimely illness and death at age 26, Christian straddled the swing and bebop styles. From his bebop sessions at Minton's Playhouse to his work with the classic Benny Goodman Sextet, Charlie Christian paved the way for the electric guitar in jazz and influenced every other jazz guitarist to come. Joining Andy for this performance will be an incredible lineup of musicians, including Denis Solee (saxophone), Lori Mechem (piano), James Westfall (vibes), Roger Spencer (bass), and Josh Hunt (drums).

The 2016 series is presented with support from The Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee, Caterpillar Financial Services, and Peter & Anne Neff.

Jazz on the Move programs take place on a series of Sunday afternoons, and are free and open to the public. All performances are at 3:00 pm in the auditorium at the Frist Center for the Visual Arts, 919 Broadway, Nashville, Tenn.
