Seed Artists is overjoyed to bring two more leading lights of improvisational music to our monthly duos series.
Angelica Sanchez and Sam Newsome have led many of their own bands over the last two-plus decades, and are in high demand as accompanists. Their records consistently make best-of lists. (Newsome's latest earned the "Masterpiece" rating from DownBeat.) Both bring an avowed commitment to both the experimental/improvisational and the lyrical, and merge them effortlessly. Two very sensitive players who can walk the high wire and do flips. Angela pulls from Latin American folk songs and even American country music, Sam from North Africa and East Asia.
We were lucky enough to feature Angela at the Eric Dolphy: Freedom of Sound festival, with Richard Davis/Andrew Cyrille/Aska Kaneko, and again with that group at William Paterson University. Can't wait to hear her in this duo setting, and to host Sam for the first time. This show promises to be brilliant. (Check out their bios below.)

ANGELICA SANCHEZ
Pianist/Composer/Educator Angelica Sanchez moved to New York from Arizona in 1994. Since moving to the East Coast Sanchez has played with such players as: Wadada Leo Smith, Paul Motian, Richard Davis, Chad Taylor, Chris Lightcap, Rob Mazurek, Vincent Chancey, Susie Ibarra, Tim Berne, Mario Pavone, Mark Dresser, Ben Monder and many more. Sanchez leads many groups including her own quintet featuring Marc Ducret, Tony Malaby, Drew Gress, and Tom Rainey. Her music has been recognized in international publications like, " Jazz Times Magazine", The New York Times, The Chicago Tribune, and many more. She was also the 2008 recipient of the French/American Chamber Music America grant and the 2011 Rockefellers Brothers Pocantico artist residency. Her CD Life Between was chosen as one of years best recording 2009 in "The New York City Jazz Record (formerly AllAboutJazz-New York)." Her debut solo CD A Little House was featured on NPRs Weekend Edition in May 2011. Her latest CD Wires & Moss featuring her Quintet was chosen as one of best Releases of 2012 in The New York City Jazz Record (formerly AllAboutJazz-New York). Her Duo CD Twine Forest with Wadada Leo Smith received Honorable Mention as a best release in 2013 in "The New York City Jazz Record." Angelica has a Master's in Arranging from William Paterson University.
SAM NEWSOME
New York-based saxophonist and composer Sam Newsome works primarily in the medium of solo saxophone, an approach through which he gained world-wide critical acclaim with the release of his 2009 recording Blue Soliloquy: Solo Works for Soprano Saxophone, which received a five-star review in Downbeat magazine.
Many of the notes and sounds that comprise his compositions and improvisations are derived from his own personal sound palette of extended techniques: multi-phonics, flutter tonguing, percussive slap tonguing, soprano saxophone specific micro-tones, air sounds, key clicks, air hisses, acoustic sound manipulation, Tartini tones, and various forms of oral cavity manipulation. Newsome sees himself more along the lines of a visual artist who paints with notes and sounds rather than shapes and colors. My music, says Newsome, is a type of improvisatory art music in which jazz functions more as a resource than a musical genre to be interpreted with stylistic specificity.
Even though Newsomes approach is unorthodox, it has proven to be very fruitfulmusically and critically.
In 2017, he was nominated for the Herb Albert Award in the Arts; in 2016, he received the NYFA Artists Fellowship for the Music/Sound category; the 2016 Jazz Journalist Association (JJA) selected him as a nominee for Soprano Saxophonist of the Year; and he placed #4 in the Soprano Saxophone category in the 64th Annual Downbeat Critics Poll--just behind Wayne Shorter and Dave Liebman.
Newsome has also released six critically acclaimed solo saxophone CDs including Sopranoville: Works for Prepared and Non-Prepared Saxophone (2017); The Straight Horn of Africa (2014); The Solo Concert: Sam Newsome Plays Monk and Ellington (2013); and The Art of the Soprano, Vol. 1 (2012). Jazz writer Ed Enright, from Downbeat Magazine, wrote that Mr. Newsomes The Straight Horn of Africa cd was a modern masterpiece.
As a performer, Newsome is a frequent collaborator with drummer Andrew Cyrille, vocalist Fay Victor, saxophonist David Liebman, and pianist Ethan Iverson. He also plays in the bands of AfroHorn, and frequently performs solo saxophone concerts around New York and across the country.
Lastly, Newsome is an associate professor of music at the Brooklyn campus of Long Island University, where he is the music program coordinator, and teaches courses in jazz improvisation, music theory, and directs the Universitys jazz ensemble.
