Raised in a musical family and trained at Havanas National School of Arts, he gained international recognition touring with Gonzalo Rubalcabas Proyecto before seeking asylum in Italy in 1990 and relocating to New York in 1993. Since then, he has become one of the most in-demand percussionists, recording with Carlos Santana, Michel Camilo, Paquito DRivera, Alejandro Sanz, and Roy Hargrove, among many others.
