One year ago, CARNATIC SUNDAYS began with the mission of bringing Carnatic music to broader audiences. Great artists like Kunnakudi Balamuralikrishna, Ashvin Bhogendra, V.K. Flute Raman, Prasant Radhakrishnan & more took Cornelia's stage. In August, we presented a very successful 3 day festival "Sangeet Utsav", featuring traditional concerts and innovative projects based in Carnatic music. To round out the successful year, The Hindu featured CARNATIC SUNDAYS on the front page of their Arts Magazine.

2012 promises to bring more great music to the Cafe, with hopes of growing our New York City Carnatic community....

Arun Ramamurthy Quartet is a unique new group bringing classic Carnatic compositions & improvisations to new light. Rooted in style of the violin virtuoso Dr. Mysore Manjunath, Arun brings fresh arrangements to age-old compositions of Carnatic's great composers. Collaborating with innovative musicians like jazz drummer Sameer Gupta, bassist Perry Wortman, and mridangist Akshay Anantapadmanabhan, the Arun Ramamurthy Quartet stays true to South Indian music's rhythmic texture and rich sound.

Karavika is a New York City based ensemble led by violinist Trina Basu and cellist Amali Premawardhana. As two artists with roots in India, Sri Lanka and North America, Trina and Amali aspire to discover and bring to light the music of their own cultural backgrounds as well as music from other parts of the world that has deeply inspired them. Drawing upon influences of nature, beauty, simple folk melodies & complex classical compositions, Karavika seeks to blend creative improvisations and arrangements with authentic traditions. Their debut album is due to be released in early 2012 and will feature original music inspired by the rhythmic complexities of Indian Classical music as well as collaborative arrangements inspired by old film and folk music from different regions in India and Sri Lanka. Perry Wortman and Advait Shah join them on bass and tabla.
