Bill Gerhardt is one of the prolific composers of our time. As with so many great composers, he writes with specific musicians in mind. Naturally, he has many projects and styles he explores, but a testament to Cotangent being his favorite outlet is its longevity; they are in their 11th year together. This is due in large part to the organic connection the members have with each other. World-renowned vibraphonist Joe Locke, a favorite of many respected jazz masters, best described the band: “The most outstanding thing about Cotangent is the sense of selflessness with which everyone in the group plays. There is one unified goal: to serve the music. This band NEEDS to be heard.”
“There is nothing more gratifying than band and listener unifying for a timeless moment to 'escape' their daily lives and transcend to the place where sound paints pictures and reveals the essence of being human,” said Gerhardt, past winner of the Down Beat Musicfest small group category with his group “Faction.”
