Sao Paulo-based guitarist/composer/vocalist Filo Machado and New York-based pianist/composer/vocalist Deanna Witkowski join forces--collectively and as a double-bill-- on Tuesday, March 23 at 7 pm at The Shrine, located at 2271 Adam Clayton Powell Blvd, New York. From 7-8, Machado and Witkowski will play as a duo in a set devoted to Machado's compositions; from 8-9, Witkowski's quartet featuring saxophonist Felipe Salles, bassist Michael O'Brien and drummer Vince Cherico will perform Witkowski's originals and arrangements, featuring Machado as a special guest.

Two acclaimed composer/performer/bandleaders from different continents, Witkowski and Machado originally met in 2006, when Witkowski visited Brazil for the first time. A longtime fan of Machado's work, she heard Machado perform on her first night in Sao Paulo. A love of dense harmonies, Brazilian rhythms, and the use of the voice as an instrument led the two to begin playing together last November, when Machado was in New York to perform at Dizzys Club at Jazz at Lincoln Center with Nilson Mattas Brazilian Voyage.
