KENDRA SHANK's seven CDs have won numerous “Best of the Year” citations, a New York Times “Critic’s Choice,” Downbeat poll recognition, and accolades for her “delectable voice” (Terry Teachout,Time magazine) and "breathtakingly original concept" (Andrew Gilbert, Boston Globe). For this Kitano performance she gathers a group of all-star collaborators whose conversational group interplay creates an in-the-moment experience of modern jazz, re-imagined standards, originals, world/folk influences, and improvisations with poems penned by Shank. Her association with pianist Frank Kimbrough began in 1992 when jazz legend Shirley Horn presented them at the Village Vanguard. Since then they've collaborated on four CDs, three of which also feature bassist Dean Johnson who joined Shank's group in 1999. Grammy-nominated drummer Matt Wilson is the newest addition to the quartet. The program will include songs by Sidney Bechet, Renee Rosnes, Fred Hersch, Jeremy Siskind, Cedar Walton, James Taylor, Abbey Lincoln, and Frank Kimbrough, all unified by Shank’s soulful storytelling, inventive phrasing, and open improvisation....
