The Public Option; Noah Preminger at 55 Bar

At New England Conservatory, jazz runs hot in young musicians' veins. It means the blaze of improvisation and individual creativity, the warmth of interaction in small ensembles. Experimentation is encouraged. And that's cool!

This tradition goes back 40 years, when NEC launched the first fully accredited jazz studies program at a music conservatory. In celebrating the 40th anniversary of this creative first, NEC dips into the past, present, and future, with a week of club dates in New York. A similar series of club appearances set Boston's jazz clubs ablaze back in October.

Trumpeter Jason Palmer, who led off those Boston dates, brings his group The Public Option to New York for a 7pm set at the 55 Bar—a prohibition-era dive bar in Greenwich Village with live jazz, funk, and blues. Band members are Michael Thomas, Greg Duncan '07, Lim Yang, Lee Fish. Saxophonist Noah Preminger '08, who closed out the Boston club series, follows with a 10pm set by his quartet: Ben Monder, John Hebert, Matt Wilson....

The 55 Bar is located at 55 Christopher Street, between 6th and 7th Avenues. A $10 cover charge at the door applies after 9:30pm, and admission for the late set is ages 21 and over.
