Abelita Mateus is passionate about Brazilian music. Pianist and singer, she studied classical piano in her teens, and gradually became more involved with jazz. Since her childhood, she enjoyed listening to a wide range of Brazilian music. She began her career in São Paulo, Brazil, where she performed in many different settings, and with such prominent musicians as Vinicius Dorin, Raul de Souza and Hermeto Pascoal. Now living in New York, Abelita is researching jazz and applying its unique sounds into her own music, as a performer and composer. With bassist Peter Slavov, drummer Alex Kautz, tenor saxophonist Matt Marantz, and vibraphonist Behn Gillece, she is beginning a new project, and getting ready to record her first album. She is also playing in different venues in New York and New Jersey with such great musicians as Claudio Roditi, Itaiguara Brandão, Peter Slavov, Portinho, and Oleg Osenkov....
