re:Vision showcases BT3 blazing through an adventurous and bombastic set of high-octane, guitar-driven compositions, alongside special guests John Medeski (organ), DJ Logic (turntables), Steve Jenkins (bass), V. Jeffrey Smith (tenor saxophone), and Stacy Dillard (tenor saxophone).
BT3, formed in 2009, has been astonishing audiences at The Blue Note, (the now defunct) Black Betty, Rose Live Music, Fat Baby, Real ArtWays (Hartford, CT), The Iridium, and on 89.3 FM WKCR's Live Constructions with their daring and unique style of instrumental, heavily improvisational jazz/funk fusion. Performing all original material composed by guitarist/band leader Ben Tyree, BT3 regularly features Theo Harden (bass) and Lawrence Qualls (drums). In early 2010, a live recording of BT3's “A Song Of Hope" was featured on a benefit compilation for Partners In Health (raising funds to benefit the earthquake victims in Haiti) called Mizik Pou Dwa Moun: A Burnt Sugar Collective Compilation for the People of Ayiti (burntsugar.bandcamp.com).
Incorporating Coltrane-esque melodic sheets of sound, funk-derived and classical finger-style rhythm playing as well as chord voicings atypical to the guitar, Tyree has established himself as one of the most versatile and creative musicians of his generation. Tyree's vision stems from studies of classical guitar, composition and jazz performance at Washington, D.C.'s Duke Ellington School of the Arts and Howard University as well as experiences with his award-winning hip-hop/fusion group, Miscellaneous Flux. Collaborations with the likes of Vernon Reid, DJ Logic, and Kyp Malone (TV On The Radio) have broadly expanded his musical vision as well as the demand for his talent. Since re-locating to New York seven years ago, Tyree has been working steadily on various projects throughout the city, with Burnt Sugar: The Arkestra Chamber, MuthaWit, Nomi, Res, Elliot Sharp's SyndaKit, Stephanie Rooker and the Search Engine, and Soul Understated (feat. Mavis “Swan" Poole), among others.
BT3’s CD release performance on Saturday, November 6 @ 9pm at BAM Café (30 Lafayette Avenue @ Ashland Place) in Brooklyn, NY is all-ages and free to the public.
