The rowdy, freewheeling Bird Fly Yellow acts as a foil to the introversion of the modern jazz scene. Drawing upon marching band music and free jazz, the group gives off heat like a speedball from Sandy Koufax’s left hand. The band’s founding members, Joe Moffett (trumpet), Dan Blacksberg (trombone) and Dave Flaherty (drums) have been working together for years, writing and performing original music as well as unearthing lesser-known works by classic free jazz musicians, such as Julius Hemphill’s "Flat-Out Jump Suite."
