Colin Hinton at The Jazz Gallery

The band heard on Simulacra includes Hinton and Gavitt along with bassist Shawn Lovato and Yuma Uesaka and Anna Webber on various reeds and flutes.

Growing up in Dallas, Hinton started classical piano lessons when he was 4. But at age 9, he discovered the energy of hardcore groups like Black Flag and Minor Threat. A few years later, playing drums in the high school band, he was turned on to Miles Davis and Wayne Shorter and his path was set.

Simulacra, his second release (following a 2018 self-release), is the first stop on that path. The pieces are simulacra of the people who, through their mentorship, friendship or just the music they made, got him there. But the title shouldn't be taken to suggest simple carbon copies. As with his compositions, there are layers at work in the title.
