Curtis Hasselbring’s trombone and guitar playing has been witnessed repeatedly on the stage at Barbes over the last 20 years. In addition to appearing with everybody from Slavic Soul Party to Big Lazy, Curtis is also known for composing unique pieces that embody his love for rock, jazz, surf, electronic, Latin and film music. Much of his output has been released either with his jazz quartet, the New Mellow Edwards, or his solo electronic/home recording based project under the name Curha.

Curtis Hasselbring’s trombone and guitar playing has been witnessed repeatedly on the stage at Barbes over the last 20 years. In addition to appearing with everybody from Slavic Soul Party to Big Lazy, Curtis is also known for composing unique pieces that embody his love for rock, jazz, surf, electronic, Latin and film music. June 11th’s show is a belated cd release show for his last Curha recording (Curha II - Chant Records), which came out the week the pandemic shut everything down. The recording was called
“surreal, entertaining and strangely cinematic” by the New York Music Daily and the New York Times said that Curtis’s music “suggests rough and rocking reflections on film music (Mancini and Hermann), Mothers of Invention and the Art Ensemble of Chicago.”

The band for this show is a quartet of Curtis on trombone/guitar/lo-fi samples, Raphael McGregor (lap steel player with Brain Cloud and Nation Beat), Adam Minkoff (bassist/multi-instrumentalist with Dweezil Zappa and Amy Helm) and Dan Rieser (drummer with Rosanne Cash and Norah Jones).

This show is part of Barbes’s Dirty Dozen series, the venue’s first steps in reopening to the general public. There is a limited capacity for each show and tickets are $20. Due to ever-changing NYS guidelines, Barbes might need to check vaccination status for entry.
