“With the poise of an opera diva and an ability to scat like Ella Fitzgerald, New York-based singer Danielle Freeman possesses a voice that commands attention with beauty and control…” All About Jazz, Mark Turner, December 28, 2010
Danielle Freeman’s music is based on an opera-jazz theme, a culmination and expansion of both genres. Her ensemble, Ladies and Gentlemen, is a unification of operatic classical forms with harmonic, rhythmic and improvisational forms, experimental jazz, electronica and soul. She has been described as a "forward thinking vocalist of jazz influence."
Freeman will be joined by Kris Davis, a Canadian pianist with an ever present musical voice within the jazz community. Greek bassist, Petros Klampanis, a successful bandleader and sideman in New York City, who recently released his first album on Greg Osby's label Inner Circle. Tomas Fujiwara, also of The Hook-Up and the banda band Red Baraat, will be featured on the drums. Brooklyn based violist and violinist improviser, Mat Maneri, will complete the ensemble sound. The first set will feature Tyson Deaton, a prolific pianist and accompanist for instrumentalist and Met Opera singers.
A classically trained vocalist from Arizona, Freeman has performed with the Lyric Opera of Chicago in their 2012 production of Showboat and their 2008 production of Porgy and Bess. In following her passion for contemporary opera, she performed with Beth Morrison's Opera Project, Hell-the Opera. She toured with Paragon Ragtime Orchestra for their 2005 production of Scott Joplin's ragtime opera, Treemonisha. She has performed workshops as “Mrs. Trout” with American Lyric Theater for their newly composed and commissioned opera the Golden Ticket, based on Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, presented at Jazz at Lincoln Center.
She also leads an acoustic bass and voice duo within New York City and Chicago. The duo is an intimate musical setting of compositions which allows freedom for the voice and the bass to interchange harmony, bass figure and melody.
This concert will also feature selected vocal-piano works from the New York Women Composers Organization in conjunction with Freeman being award the organization's Seed Grant for concert performance.
The performance is Sunday, December 2nd at 8:00PM to 9:30PM at The Drom, 85 Avenue A , New York, NY 10009 (www.dromnyc.com, (212) 777-1157).
