The upright Grand Piano from the early 19th c., is just like the ones once used in creating the Classic Jazz we still hear today. BrownstoneJAZZ Charles M. Stieff Co., piano also has American history. Referred to as the poor mans Steinway. When actually it could stand with Grand Steinways from the same era. Brownstone houses, Stieff pianos are no longer created being build.
We are very happy to share the history of Jazz, in a house, on a piano that date back as far as the 1800s. Other popular acoustic style instruments are presented as well by our musicians in THE ROOM.
During the 1930 maybe earlier, one didn't always go to Harlem for the Jazz scene. Brooklyn had one as well. Bedford Stuyvesant one of the largest Jazz neighborhood around held many venues that housed jazz greats like Thelonius Monk, Randy Weston, Miles Davis, Max Roach, Hank Mobley, Lena Horne and others. Brooklyn's Paramount Theatre among others held major Jazz Concerts. All of which eventually changed, causing jazz clubs to fizzle out in favor of a different generation of music. The Uptown and Midtown jazz rooms changed as well.
Debbie McClain, owner of Sankofa Aban Bed and Breakfast looked to revive the local community scene of the past. Including jazz from the past when she met with partner Eric Lemons an accomplished string musician. Together they co-foundered BrownstoneJAZZ where they both value authenticity and are selective when deciding who to feature and what to hear.
This is Salon Jazz, intimate, classic, acoustic concerts plain and simple every Friday and Saturday night. A fun loving atmosphere of live jazz for everyone. You’re invited to spend a magical evening of music as Debbie and Eric take you behind the scenes with this undercover jazz experience. Meet the performers, and as you take your seat for a jazz fest of a lifetime. These two host will present you with today’s best Jazz artist.
FYI
DebbieMc never set out to own a BnB, but once she did magic happened. A hairstylist by trade when her grandparents 1939 home fell into her lap to save and maintain. Much bad energy once filled the property, but she knew that music would cleanse this 19th century home.
Debbie McClain once a long time piano student is just one of now the 6 generational family of music lovers. Also at the same time she would be able to show and share the beauty of the homes from Brooklyn begone.
Continuing the history of the neighborhood, a group of jazz locals and broadway greats Blue Note recording artists like James Spaulding, Trombonist/Euphonist Kiane Zawadi, vocalist Keisha St. James, Boncellia Lewis, Greg Bandy and Bobby Sanabria connect over music in a tradition that’s diminished, but clearly not lost, with a style of life from an earlier time.
