Composer Ricky Ian Gordon has composed Autumn Valentine, a suite of settings of Dorothy Parker’s poems that is ripe as ever for the today’s climate. Soprano Candice Hoyes and baritone Jorell Williams sing this intimate exploration of monogamous love. As the pair lives out “a marriage that fails” as Gordon describes it, the songs highlight the individual growth and mutual resolution that blossom in the wake of romantic downfall with wit and tenderness. Williams and Hoyes also reunite with longtime collaborator, pianist and conductor Chris Cooley.
