In Brooklyn, there is a consistently growing community of composers/improvisers making exciting original instrumental music. Most performances are free or donation only, but the scene can be difficult for an outsider to navigate: Is this the band’s first performance? Did they rehearse? Have they even met before? “Buried in Brooklyn” is a free showcase at Freddy’s Bar in South Park Slope starting at 8:30pm presenting three underground bands who have put in diligent work over a period of years to craft their own unique soundscape:

SWEET TALK. In September 2011 Trumpeter Jake Henry, guitarist Dustin Carlson, and drummer Devin Drobka came together to form Sweet Talk. Informed by their expansive musical experience, these performers are creating an ever morphing musical language. Henry’s compositions blend off-kilter melodies with intricate fingerpicked guitar that the band deconstructs into everything from trashy noise rock to delicately developed soundscapes. SIGNAL PROBLEMS. This band of Baltimore to Brooklyn transplants performs a series of indeterminate, John Cage inspired, compositions designed to leverage the improvisational flexibility and familiarity of these close musical associates against a set of arbitrary, unpredictable rules. Although performances are often inspired by jazz aesthetics, this nimble ensemble will regularly turn on a dime, taking the music in any number of unpredictable directions.
