In the first night of a two-night Darius Jones stand, Sound It Out presents a live performance of Darius Jones' new album, "The Oversoul Manual," featuring his vocal quartet, The Elizabeth-Caroline Unit with Amirtha Kidambi, Sarah Martin, Kristin Slipp and Jean-Carla Rodea.
The fourth installment of Jones’ Man’ish Boy epic, "The Oversoul Manual" tells of a sacred alien birthing ritual completed by performing this a cappella song cycle in 15 parts.
Having been awarded the Van Lier Fellowship by Roulette, Jones used this to launch The Elizabeth-Caroline Unit, a project dedicated to new works for voice. In that vein, "The Oversoul Manual" finds Jones exploring his first instrument, the voice, and draws upon a range of classical influences, from his childhood singing in church in Virginia, to his critically acclaimed work in the New York music scene. Through an original linguistic and sonic vocabulary created by Jones, this a cappella performance expresses the hope and truth that real communication lies beyond the realm of words and the familiar....
