The Joel Newton Situation (JNS) has been performing in and out of NYC in different forms for 15 years, starting out in the late 90's with long stints at the Knitting Factory Tap Bar. All About Jazz calls Joel’s music “a new angle on jazz-rock… with intergalactic travels… irony and contrast aplenty… and introspective quietude interspersed with explosive energy” and ranks him “on a par with seminal players like Bill Frisell and Ben Monder." JNS, described by the Village Voice as “a sort of Medeski, Martin, and Mahavishnu,” continues to evolve, its latest form featuring saxophonist Kenny Brooks (Alphabet Soup, Charlie Hunter Quartet, Ratdog), a couple of hugely talented ultra-youngsters on rhythm, and lots of brand-new material.
