Winner of the prestigious 2008 Thelonious Monk Saxophone Competition and the New York City Jazz Record’s 2012 Musician of the Year, Jon Irabagon has become an essential voice on the New York music scene. A member of such high-profile ensembles as Mostly Other People Do The Killing, the Mary Halvorson Quintet, Dave Douglas’ new quintet, and an established bandleader in his own right, Irabagon is widely recognized in settings ranging from straight-ahead jazz and post-bop to the outer realms of experimental music and free improvisation. Tonight, audiences will enjoy the more swinging side of Irabagon’s music, as he and his longstanding rhythm section perform music from 2015’s critically-acclaimed Behind the Sky (released on his Irabbagast Records) as well as new, previously unheard music. The emotional material on Behind the Sky was composed as a reflection of the grieving process, yet the mood is far from somber, and the band’s fiery playing creates plenty of catharsis and excitement to compliment their more introspective moments.
