About

Joshua Nelson, the Prince of Kosher Gospel, discovered the music of Mahalia Jackson as a child and fell in love with her singing. Born and raised Jewish, Nelson combines Jewish liturgical lyrics with one of America’s best-known indigenous musical forms. For Nelson, kosher gospel is a way to claim both parts of his identity as a Black Jew.

This series is made possible with public funds from the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature.
