A shining light in Canada’s jazz scene, award-winning Canadian saxophonist, composer and educator Kirk MacDonald has maintained his integrity as one of Canada’s leading saxophonists for over 25 years.

MacDonald's "Vista Obscura" (featuring Harold Mabern) won "Jazz Album of the Year" at the 2015 Juno Awards. His newest release (and 15th as leader) "Generations" again features Mabern, and also debuts Kirk's daughter, rising star clarinetist Virginia MacDonald.

Harold Mabern, one of jazz’s most enduring and dazzlingly skilled pianists, has garnered appreciation for his long-running legacy and the understated power of his talent. As critic Gary Giddins has written, “With the wind at his back, he can sound like an ocean roar.”

During his over half-century on the scene as sideman and leader, Mabern has played and recorded with such greats as Lee Morgan, Sonny Rollins, Hank Mobley, Freddie Hubbard and Miles Davis, just to name a few. “I was never concerned with being a leader, I just always wanted to be the best sideman I could be. Be in the background so you can shine through.”


In a hybrid lecture-demonstration format, Kirk MacDonald and Harold Mabern will take the stage to share some insights into their approach to writing and playing jazz.
