Based in New York City, Cuban pianist and composer Manuel Valera leads his new working project: New Cuban Express. The new release of the same name marks Valera’s sixth record as a leader and a new direction in his playing and writing — focusing on material derived from the Afro-Cuban tradition.
A project deeply influenced by the experiments of Cuban artists from the 70s and 80s and inspired by artists Irakere, Emiliano Salvador and AfroCuba, Valera’s New Cuban Express creates a unique and distinctive style that mixes elements of Jazz, R&B, fusion and funk with Cuban music styles. The band features Yosvany Terry (saxophone and chekere), John Benitez (bass), Tom Guarner (guitar), Eric Doob (drums) and Paulo Stagnaro (percussion).
Valera has become well known in the New York City modern jazz scene, garnering national reviews and lending his talents as a pianist and composer to such notable artist as Arturo Sandoval, Paquito D’Rivera, Brian Lynch, Jeff Tain Watts, Dafnis Prieto, Lenny White, Yosvany Terry, John Benitez, Samuel Torres, Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra and Adam Rogers among many others.
