Mary Foster Conklin & Andrea Wolper - Hot Summer Jazz Series at Pangea

Veterans of New York’s vocal jazz-and-beyond scenes Andrea Wolper and Mary Foster Conklin will share the stage in Pangea’s Hot Summer Jazz series, curated by Ben Cassara.

For many years the longtime friends held the two vocal chairs in Art Lillard’s Heavenly Big Band, singing swinging arrangements of originals and standards in venues all over town, and appearing on the band’s 2015 release, “Certain Relationships.”

While Conklin is a presence in both the jazz and cabaret worlds, Wolper travels between straight ahead and experimental jazz. Yet the blend of voices, sensibilities, and humor works: with these two, “salt and vinegar” (The New York Times on Conklin) and “shaved ice over cocoa” (JazzTimes on Wolper) go together just fine....

The Pangea set will have the singers doing some duetting, as well taking solo turns. They’ll be supported by pianist John Di Martino (with whom both vocalists have worked with for many years) and bassist Ken Filiano.
