During the 1930, perhaps even earlier, one didnโt always go to Manhattan for the Jazz scene Brooklyn was known for one too. Bedford Stuyvesant had one of the largest Jazz communities in Nee York City. It held many venues that housed jazz greats like Thelonius Monk, Lena Horne, Abbey Lincoln, Randy Weston, Miles Davis, Max Roach, Betty Carter, Hank Mobley and others. All eventually changed, and jazz club fizzled out in favor of a different generation of music.
Debbie McClain, owner of Sankofa Aban Bed and Breakfast seeks to revive the local jazz scene of the past along with her partner Eric Lemons an accomplished string musician. Together they value the authenticity of jazz and selectiveness in deciding who to feature and when.
Continuing the history of the neighborhood, a group of jazz locals and broadway greats like Blue Note recording artist James Spaulding, Pianist Lafayette Harris, Marion Cowings, Trombonist/ Euphonist Kiane Zawadi, vocalist Keisha St. James, Vanessa Rubins, Jazzmeia Horn, including actress/singer Boncella Lewis and Grammy nominated Bobby Sanabria plus Grammy winners have presented there and connected over the music, in a tradition diminished, but clearly still around.
