Nate Wooley's Argonautica Record Release at Roulette

The story of Jason and the Argonauts begins with a collection of warriors, each with different talents, viewpoints, and temperaments, coming together to create an imperfect mosaic that is suited to their task. On his new album, Argonautica, Nate Wooley takes the same stance as he gathers players from different aesthetics to tell an abstract musical story on a grand level.

Featuring a double trio with Wooley and underheard trumpet great Ron Miles on brass, Jozef Dumoulin and Cory Smythe playing electronics, keyboards, and piano, and Devin Gray and Rudy Royston providing the percussive propulsion, Argonautica combines elements of aleatoric and minimalist compositional aesthetics and forces them the prism of early fusion. The piece premiered at Roulette in 2014 and subsequently immortalized in an episode of Roulette TV, our ongoing video series dedicated to capturing the creative process of live performance. The full length work veers between the shattered dissonance of dodecaphony, a dream-like ambient music presence, and the insistent ecstatic quality of 70s minimalism. Oregon native Nate Wooley is one of the most in-demand trumpeters in the Brooklyn jazz, improv, noise, and new music scenes. He has performed and collaborated with John Zorn, Anthony Braxton, Eliane Radigue, Yoshi Wada, C. Spencer Yeh, and many others. Nate is the curator of the Database of Recorded American Music and the editor-in-chief of their online quarterly journal Sound American. Nate is a recipient of the 2016 Foundation for Contemporary Arts Grants to Artist Award.
