New School Studio Orchestra Concert With Nick Marchione And Douglas Purviance at Tishman Auditorium At The New School

The College of Performing Arts's newest large ensemble, the New School Studio Orchestra, is composed of students from the School of Jazz and Contemporary Music and Mannes School of Music, performing music from a wide variety of genres including jazz, soul, pop, and improvised music.

This evening's concert will focus on the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra book with the group's lead trumpeter Nick Marchione and orchestra manager and trombonist Douglas Purviance co-directing.

The Vanguard Jazz Orchestra is the current title for a band that began its life as Thad Jones-Mel Lewis and The Jazz Orchestra in 1966 and has performed continuously over 50 years. Over the past decades, The Vanguard Jazz Orchestra has received multiple Grammy’s and Grammy Nominations for every recording they've made. Several of the ensemble's current key members played for Thad, so the original precepts of sound and swing are proudly held and displayed while the other original precepts of creativity and experimentation are nurtured and encouraged....
