In Betye Saar's exhibit "Keepin' It Clean", her art object of Aunt Jemima holding a shotgun painted on a washboard radicalized both Aunt Jemima and my concept of the washboard. The washboard is now my tool for social change.

Like V-P Kamala Harris, I was formed by the HBCU culture. As a Virginia State University campus brat and graduate, and professor at Livingstone College, I am inspired to celebrate my rich HBCU experience with the premiere of WashboardXT_Four featuring Matthew Shipp, Trashina Conner (a Howard U grad) and Stomu Takeishi. I will be using a new Shure drum microphone that picks up the subtle qualities of my touch on the washboard. I am excited to see what these great artists and I will create. ...

About Newman:
In 2010 Newman Taylor Baker met the washboard, and it changed his life. With the washboard, Baker created Washboard XT in order to share the washboard experience with as many people as possible. Beginning in New York City with Andrea Wolper's Why Not Jazz series, Washboard XT has appeared in Szczecin, Warszawa, Zielona Góra, Poznań, Wrocław, Osaka, Nagoya, and Tokyo. And the journey continues.

Suggested minimum donation is $5. Donations go towards funding artist fees. Arts for Art's On_Line Salon series features live streaming FreeJazz performances and conversations every Tuesday and Thursday.
