[residency] Okkyung Lee: Red Eclipse at Roulette

Experimental cellist Okkyung Lee begins her spring Roulette residency with the premiere of “Red Eclipse,” featuring a large string ensemble and percussionist Ches Smith. Loosely inspired by Michelangelo Antonioni's masterpiece "L'Eclisse" and designed to accompany future video projects, this program will evoke the feeling of longing, time suspended in the air, misunderstandings of the self (or selves), and fragility.

Since moving to New York in 2000, Okkyung Lee has released more than 20 albums, creating a body of work that blurs genre boundaries and pushes the limitation of contemporary cello performance techniques. She has performed and recorded with artists such as Laurie Anderson, Mark Fell, Jenny Hval, Vijay Iyer, Ikue Mori, and John Zorn. In 2015, Okkyung Lee presented new compositions commissioned for members of London Sinfonietta as a part of Christian Marclay’s 2015 exhibition at London’s White Cube Gallery. Her recent releases include Ghil, a solo record produced by Lasse Marhaug, and Wake Up Awesome, a collaboration with Marhaug and C. Spencer Yeh, released on Brooklyn’s Software Recording Co.
