Contra-Temp is an exciting new music duo that features composer/performers Salvatore Macchia Contrabass, and Jazer Giles electronics. Its repertoire is made up of pieces for solo bass, bass and synthesized sound, bass and live electronics, and bass live electronics and interactive video. Although the group is actively involved in commissioning new works, they are also dedicated to performing the “classic” twentieth century bass pieces and their repertoire features music by Charles Whittenberg, Andrzej Dobrowolski, Charles Wourinen, Mario Davidosky, George Perle and others. In addition, improvisation plays an important element in the duo’s concerts, as does interactive video. The goal of the duo is both to expand the possibilities of live performance, interactive electronics and video, and to present an exciting aural and visual landscape, that both the connoisseur and the less experienced listener can enjoy....

Salvatore Macchia enjoys an active career as a performer and composer. A 2006-2007 Samuel Conti Award fellowship winner, Macchia’s compositions have been performed throughout the United States, as well as in Russia and Japan. In addition, his music has been performed frequently major European cities and festivals, including Berlin, Florence, Bordeaux, Strasbourg, Mantova, the Festival "Bruit de la Neige" in Annecy, France, the Computer Arts Festival in Padova, the “Musica Nuova Festival" IX° edition, Senigallia and the Santa Maria Musica Nuova Festival in Ancona, Italy. Other performances have taken place at the Warsaw Autumn Festival in Poland, the American Academy in Rome, the New England Chamber Music and Composers Conference, and the Aspen and Monadnock and Green Mountain Festivals in the USA. His music has been recorded on the Albany, Gasparo, Open Loop, MSR Classics, and Rivoalto labels.
Macchia teams up with Northampton musician Jazer Giles, who will match his artistry with live electronics and video to eerie effect. Drawing on his background in mathematics and physics, Jazer uses the visual programming software Max/MSP to develop unique approaches to interactive live electronic music and video. The program will include work by Macchia, Giles, Jacob Druckman, and Andrzej Dobrowolski.
