This triple bill features headliners, Shakers n’ Bakers, a band that plays reinterprets Shaker folk tunes through the stylistic lenses of gospel, funk, soul and free jazz.
The Shakers n’ Bakers assemblage includes reed player/band-leader Jeff Lederer, bassist Chris Lightcap, Jamie Saft on keys and two very different vocalists, Miles Griffith and Mary LaRose. For this occasion, a special guest, drummer Matt Wilson, lends his rhythmic prowess to the Shaker effort.
In support of the Shakers, Ben Perowsky’s varied collective, Moodswing Orchestra brings a medley of electronics, live instrumentation and an eclectic group of special guests to the Southpaw stage. The core trio of drummer Perowsky, pianist Glenn Patscha and turntable maestro Markus Miller are joined by, Steven Bernstien on trumpet, bassist Oren Bloedow, tuba player, Marcus Rojas, Doug Weiselman, clarinets and Pamelia Kurstin on theremin. The cast of vocal collaborators varies, but can include Joan [As Policewoman] Wasser, Miho Hatori, Jennifer Charles or TK Wonder. Expect to see one or all of these lovely accompanists at Southpaw.
Kalashnikov, the moniker for the rhythmic onslaught that is Jamie Saft and Mike Pride round out this stunning bill, with a pummeling sonic barrage, guaranteed to thrill even the most jaded music-heads.
Inside the Whale’s participating artists come from across the varied musical communities of New York City, but share many commonalities. All are considered luminaries in what is colloquially referred to as the “downtown” scene. All are jazz musicians, composers and improvisers of great acclaim. And all are in-demand sidemen across a wide spectrum of jazz, rock, world and experimental music that defies categorization. It is these undefined musical personas that Inside the Whale seeks to showcase at Southpaw next month.
For too long artists playing unconventional music have been relegated to the dark corners of the avant garde, or lavish jazz halls. While there’s certainly nothing wrong with seeing music in those capacities, the borders of genre can no longer contain certain improvisers. These musicians have strayed beyond jazz and into some unidentifiable realm: one that yearns for a larger and more diverse body of listeners. Thus Inside the Whale attempts to provide artists with a new setting to expand in.
At Southpaw, a large capacity rock venue, artists like Kalashnikov, Shakers n Bakers and Moodswing Orchestra can play for greater audiences without the pressures attached to genre-defined venues.
