For those not familiar, Oscar Brown, Jr.  (1926-2005) was a writer, poet, commentator on life, and civil rights activist. Morris Gearring brings “Something About Oscar!” to New York City’s Sugar Bar for performances June 12 & 13, 2015. “This is my sixth year of performing tributes to Oscar Brown, Jr. -- who penned more than 1,000 songs -- so one never has to worry about seeing the same show twice,” commented the artist, who has presented his tribute shows over forty times to packed houses in
New York and Chicago.
Gearring will feature Oscar Brown Jr. favorites, including “Signifyin Monkey,” “Work Song,” “The Snake,” “But I was Cool,” and popular 70’s hits “Bull Shit” and “The Lone Ranger.” The performance will honor Abbey Lincoln, who helped secure Oscar’s very first recording deal.
Gearring will be joined by internationally known comedian Akash Bhasin, who has entertained crowds in China and India as well as the US, where he has been featured in the critically acclaimed series It’s a Chucked Up Life and been a part of the popular Cult Comedy Picture Show.
Pianist Calvin “Koco” Brunson - who worked with Oscar Brown, Jr. is musical director for “Something About Oscar!” -  Lonnie Plaxico on bass, and Kwame Steve Cobb and Victor See Yuen on percussion. The production is directed by the highly acclaimed and award-winning Chuck Smith, a resident director at Chicago’s Goodman Theatre.
