Alwan for the Arts is pleased to present George Ziadeh, an exceptional musician, 'oudist, vocalist and lead musician in Alwan's signature Arab Music Ensemble. Ziadeh will be performing a unique repertoire on 'oud, accompanied on strings by cellist Naseem Alatrash and violinist Layth Al-Rubaye, with Zafer Tawil on percussion.

Biographies
GEORGE ZIADEH was born in Birzeit, Palestine, and pursued music from a young age. In 1986 he moved to the United States, where he has studied ‘oud with Simon Shaheen and classical singing and voice with Youssef Kassab. Ziadeh has performed as a soloist and as a member of various ensembles including the Alwan Arab Music Ensemble and the University of Chicago’s Middle East Music Ensemble with Issa Boulos. He toured at the University of Colorado (Boulder) and performed at the United Nations. Ziadeh lectures annually at the Columbia University Department of Ethnomusicology. In 2008, he was a featured soloist and ensemble performer in the Brooklyn Maqam Festival of Arab Music. NASEEM ALATRASH is a classically trained Palestinan cellist and improviser of diverse styles. After studying at The Edward Said National Conservatory on Music in Palestine, Alatrash was awarded a full scholarship to attend Berklee College of Music in Boston. He has since go on to achieve the highest honors for BMus in cello performance. Alatrash has featured at The Nancy Jazz Festival, Lebanon’s Beiteddin Festival, Jerash Festival, and in the Aldeburgh World Orchestra’s London Olympic tour appearing at The BBC Proms in The Royal Albert Hall, and at Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw. He has enjoyed performances alongside Ron Carter, Simon Shaheen, Leo Blanco, Javier Limon, Cafe De Silva, among others. The twice awarded “string player of the year” from The National Music Competition of Palestine, Alatrash continues to be a voice for Palestinian culture and an advocate of its music through his global string quartet The Four Corners Quartet.
LAYTH AL-RUBAYE, born in Baghdad and raised in Amman, is a leading Middle Eastern violinist on the world music stage. Classically trained under Timur Ibrahimov at the National Music Conservatory in Amman, as well as at Chetham’s School of Music in Manchester, England, he continued his violin studies alongside world acclaimed Arab musician Simon Shaheen at Berklee College of Music, graduating with the highest honors and recieving a BMus in Violin performance. Al-Rubaye has enjoyed performances alongside renowned musicians including A R Rahman, Ron Carter, Lalah Hathaway, Jorge Drexler, Ivan Lins, as well as with Alejandro Sanz at the 2013 Latin Grammy Awards Gala. With Naseem Alatrash, Al-Rubaye currently leads The Four Corners Quartet, a string quartet formed by members from Jordan, Palestine, the United States and the United Kingdom.
ZAFER TAWIL is a renowned musician who has mastered the ‘oud, violin, qanun and the full range of Arab percussion instruments. A virtuouso in the field, Tawil has performed with numerous musicians Arab music greats such as Simone Shaheen, Chab Mami and Bassam Saba, Sting, and avant-garde composer/performer Elliot Sharpe, among others. He has composed music for a number of films including the Oscar-nominated Jonathan Demme film Rachel Getting Married, and has worked on many collaborative concerts involving classical Indian and Persian music, Arabic/jazz fusion, and Arabic music at many institutions and universities across the United States. A native of Jerusalem, Palestine, he resides in New York City.
