The International Street Cannibals, called by the New York Times a "brash new music ensemble", will present “Schubert High”, on Sunday, May 13 – 7:30 PM at St Mark's in-the-Bowery, 131 East 10th Street (at 2nd Ave.) in Manhattan.
The evening will include performances of original settings and re-contextualizations of Schubert, the music of Wotan "Lefty" Barrett, Dan Cooper, John Feeney, and Gene Pritsker, and new choreography and dances by Megan Sipe.
During the course of the concert, we'll hear, among other things, striking settings of Schubert: a version of his Quartettsatz (in C minor, D. 703) , in an augmented scoring in which contrabass and African djembe undergird the texture; three novel musical settings of Schubert Lieder, performed by baritone Charles Coleman and pianist Taka Kigawa, in which an added third instrument is utilized for each, as the instrumental variable. As well, Orchestra of St Luke's concertmaster Krista Bennion Feeney will help render the Variations movement of the "Trout" Quintet, featuring Taka Kigawa on piano....

A world premiere of Dan Cooper's solo work for contrabass work will feature Orchestra of St Luke's Principal bassist John Feeney. Gene Pritsker will contribute an original work for string quartet, "All Our Gods Are Lazy", and offbeat renderings of The Ramones' "Rock and Roll High School", and Alice Cooper's "School's Out".
Our audience will look on, as the ISC's pom-pom accoutred cheerleading squad will make human pyramids, and spell out names of composers, tempo designations, terms for musical structures. Audience members will join in saying the "Pledge of Allegience". We'll run into some of Schubert High's faculty - like metal-shop teacher Mr Cooper, social studies teacher Mr Pritsker, and guidance councellor Ms Takeda; we'll hear Principal Learned's intercom announcements, and we'll see the school janitor Sal "Lefty" Barretto, mopping up in between pieces. As well, the audience will vote, between the choices of Charles "Krooner" Coleman, Taka Kigawa, and Cesare Papetti, for Schubert High's "most popular" student.
International Street Cannibals performers for the eve's event will include Charles Coleman, baritone; Krista Bennion Feeney, violin; Mioi Takeda, violin; Chala Yancey, viola, Dan Barrett, cello; John Feeney, bass; Taka Kigawa, piano, Cesare Papetti, djembe; and dancers Karen Harvey, Amanda Mottur, Megan Sipe, and Keeley Walsh.

The International Street Cannibals offer a wide range of traditional and non traditional chamber works by great European masters, contemporary American composers, and satirists. Improvisatory and semi-staged works are also presented in ways that expand and redefine the boundaries of the concert hall.
