The Last Poets With Jamaaladeen Tacuma’s Band Of Resistance at Marcus Garvey Park

The concert, in conjunction with Summerstage, Harlem Week and Jazzmobile, is a Harlem homecoming for The Last Poets, who were formed there in 1968. Their Afrocentric, Black Power-themed, groundbreaking albums, including Right On!, This is Madness, and their eponymously titled LP, were the building blocks of rap, from Public Enemy to KRS-One, and the spoken word phenomenon of the eighties and nineties ,including Russell Simmons Def Comedy Jam. The Philadelphia-born bassist Tacuma has been a pioneering artist since the seventies.
He’s worked with an impressive array of jazz luminaries including David Murray, Olu Dara, James “ Blood” Ulmer, and was a member of Ornette Coleman’s Prime Time ensemble. He has 20 recordings as a leader. ...

Opening for The Last Poets and Tacuma’s Band of Resistance will be two youth-based venues: the Impact Theatre, a Harlem repertory company that provides a safe space where young people to use current events and their own personal experiences to explore contemporary issues, and The Harlem Bomb Shelter, where young adult poets express their artistry. Haitian-American DJ Greg Caz, will provide the Afro-Diasporic Brazilian beats.
