Who could take something as timeless and classic as gypsy jazz and turn it into something fresh and modern? Having done the same to so many other genres throughout his journeyman career, NYC guitarist Scott Metzger brings his distinctive, deconstructive style to the music made famous by Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grapelli. Metzger's brand new acoustic trio, The Showdown Kids, featuring Katie Jacoby on violin and Simon Kafka on guitar, pays loving reverence to jazz guitar of yore while updating it for the current day. The threesome combine an inventive repertoire, conversational interplay and a without-a-map spirit, capturing the quiet beauty of the gypsy jazz sound while taking it into uncharted territory. Metzger has never played in an all-acoustic group before and he has revealed yet another voice in his no-bounds guitar playing. Jacoby and Kafka are equals in the trio, rounding out a band that is as comfortable tackling a challenging Jimmy Bryant number as they are luxuriating in a classic Guaraldi tune or re-imagining a Beatles hit.
