The new jazz documentary I CALLED HIM MORGAN premieres at Lincoln Center on March 24 and runs throughout that weekend. (It will run the following weekend at Metrograph, in downtown NYC, the following weekend.) The film is about the acclaimed hard bop trumpeter Lee Morgan, who recorded 25 albums on Blue Note Records. Morgan was a member of Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers until his descent into drug addiction debilitated him. Helen Morgan revived the man and his career, but eventually shot him to death during a gig at the legendary Lower East Side club Slug's in 1972.
