About

A first encounter between two world-class masters:

Pianist and composer Frank Kimbrough has been on the NYC scene since 1981. Straddling the divide between traditional jazz and freely improvised music, he was a founding member and composer-in-residence of the Jazz Composers Collective (1992 – 2005), and played in 20 of its associated ensembles including Ted Nash’s Double Quartet, Ben Allison’s Medicine Wheel and Peace Pipe, Ron Horton’s Quartet, Michael Blake’s Elevated Quartet, and repertory ensembles playing the music of Herbie Nichols, Lennie Tristano and Andrew Hill. Since 1993, he has held the piano chair in the Maria Schneider Orchestra (and in her collaborations with Dawn Upshaw and the Australian Chamber Orchestra, and with David Bowie), and has also appeared with The Gil Evans Project, Dewey Redman, , Paul Bley, Lee Konitz and Paul Motian among many others. His many recordings as a leader are available on Soul Note, Omnitone, Palmetto, Newvelle, and Pirouet. He appears on 70 more as a sideman. ...
