The May performances in this series will explore improvisation and musical languages. The first group of improvisers is led by Jackson Moore and will explore Moss, a musical pidgin language that he has designed. Moss features a tiny lexicon of basic melodic shapes where pitch, pacing, inflection, and other aspects of melody carry specific meanings. During this musical conversation, these elements are left to free variation, where they're magnetized by the desire of the speaker to be understood. The second set of improviser will include a variety of musical languages, including avant jazz, rock, and experimentalism. The group will include trumpeter Vance Provey, has long career working with avant jazz musicians including Milford Graves, Bill Dixon, Bill Frisell and Stephen Haynes.
