Jazz as an art form is based on being completely focused in the present moment. Being aware of our surroundings and harmonizing with the other musicians and an audience. The Shinnyo Center Jazz Meditation sessions will explore this concept with the musicians playing off the words of the meditation guide who in turn reflects the musicians.

Our being resonates with the sound of music, feeling the vibration of a live performance. This experience brings our awareness to the present moment. It wakens something inside of us and helps to set our lives into a more natural rhythm.

Meditation practice is like playing piano scales. Practice requires discipline; it can be tedious; it is necessary. After you have practiced enough, you become more skilled at the art form itself. You do not practice to become a great scale player. You practice to become a musician. Likewise, one does not practice meditation to become a great meditator. We meditate to wake up and live, to become skilled at the art of living....
