Loide “in Time" Album Release Concert at DROM

Pouring vocals as cool as water into lush arrangements composed largely by original Lucky Dube guitarist Mongezi Nkata, singer/songwriter Loide (prounced loy-deh) presents her first full-length, in-studio album In Time. The 10 original tracks, all written by Loide, run deep with blood, tears, faith, and resilience; mining her helix of sonic influences, and revealing her rare musical path. Born in France to her Mozambican mother and Guinea-Bissauan father, California-raised Loide grew up at the intersection of seemingly disparate cultural expressions. With only hymnals, doo-wop, and soul allowed in her observant Christian home, these sonic styles would form the first strands of her melodic DNA. Later, she would fuse them with the Afro-Luso rhythms she heard when surrounded by family and friends, the Portuguese hymnals sang at home and church, and the chorale compositions she studied and performed in community productions and recitals. On track after track, she taps these references to brilliant effect, code switching and interchanging English and Portuguese with dexterity. In the process, her story and sound call up Cesaria Evora, Miriam Makeba, Sarah Vaughn, Leontyne Price, and Sade—streaming past easy category and convention. This is jazz with a side of saudade.
