Brooklyn’s rapidly evolving Prospect Height’s neighborhood gets a new concert series through the collaboration of community members and DIY artists. The artist-led record label, Music Starts From Silence, joins forces with the Church of Saint Joseph to bring an exciting new concert series into the heart of the community. The inaugural event features Brooklyn artists Loop 2.4.3 and Javier Arau’s New Jazz Quartet.
Loop 2.4.3’s performance at St. Joseph’s will consist mainly of music from their newly-released 3rd album, American Dreamland, which Gramophone called “visceral and satisfying...a riveting aura, a genuine time warp.” Varied instrumentation showcases the steel drum, marimba, Native American flute, and two instruments of the artist’s invention: the Rose Echo, and the Elog (electronic log drum). Never idle, the duo will bring 2 new compositions and resurrect pieces from their previous albums.
Led by saxophonist and composer Javier Arau, the New Jazz Quartet explores new music and classics, creatively putting a modern jazz spin on all its repertoire. A front cover artist on the Saxophone Journal, Arau has been featured in DownBeat Magazine, the New York Times, and All About Jazz, and he has received national awards and recognition from ASCAP, BMI, and MENC, among others. Mr. Arau also directs the New York Jazz Academy, which has an active branch in Brooklyn.
More on Loop 2.4.3:
This performance is part of the American Dreamland Tour, a project developed in collaboration with NYC-based fine artist, Jon Waldo. Waldo’s paintings, throbbing, psychedelic renderings of emblematic American objects, are featured in the album’s artwork, and used as projections in live performance. Also featured are Waldo’s photographs of desolate, industrial areas of Brooklyn, NY, and pastoral settings of New England. These add to the poignant, dramatic, and widely varied musical compositions.
[Loop 2.4.3]’s much lauded live performances have earned responses such as “fascinating”, “richly detailed”, “hypnotic” (Time Out New York), “mesmerizing” and “stunning” (Time Out Chicago), “Transportive” (the Boston Phoenix), and in a nod to their originality, NPR’s Fresh Air said that “it all sounds like part of a well-thought-out tradition. Only the tradition has never existed until now.” Copies of the new album will be available on CD and 12” vinyl, as well as posters and T-shirts featuring Waldo’s colorful artwork.
