The Michael Leonhart Orchestra annual concerts have been a highlight of the Rizzoli Music Aperitivo Series. It is therefore with great anticipation that Rizzoli hosts the CD Launch for The Normyn Suites (Sunnyside Records).

The Normyn Suites is both a requiem and celebration, inspired by the life and death of the bandleader’s 15-year-old dog, a female mini dachshund named Normyn. The third album by the MLO features a pair of suites - the first of which is an exploration of the stages of grieving, while the second is a reflection on love and loss. Leonhart's friend and author Alexandra Horowitz ("Inside of a Dog: What Dogs See, Smell and Know) writes in the liner notes: "The Normyn Suites is an elegy; to listen is to spend time in that space of loss, reckoning, questioning, and mourning. At the same time, though, with each note, each phrase, we are propelled back into life."

In keeping with the MLO’s eclectic musical palette, the album features collaborations with Elvis Costello, Bill Frisell, Larry Goldings, Nels Cline, and rapper JSWISS as well as two bonus offerings with Donny McCaslin.

The lineup will feature: Michael Leonhart: trumpet and direction; E.J. Strickland: drums; Joe Martin: bass; Robbie Mangano: guitar; Elizabeth Pupo-Walker: percussion; Freddie Hendrix, Jordan McLean and Carter Yasutake: trumpets; Adam Dotson: trombone; John Altieri: tuba; Donny McCaslin, Jason Marshall: saxophones; Ludovica Burtone: violin.
Michael Leonhart is a Grammy-winning multi-hyphenate: trumpeter, composer, producer, arranger, multi-instrumentalist and songwriter. As a trumpeter, Michael has performed with rock legends Steely Dan since 1996, recording several albums with them, including 2000's four-time Grammy winning Album of the Year, “Two Against Nature”, on which he was a featured soloist, arranger and conductor. He also appears on Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars’ Grammy-winning 2016 Record of the Year, “Uptown Funk.” Michael has composed music for stage and screen, including a song for Meryl Streep, whose performance he directed on the Decca soundtrack album Songs of Lahore. Most recently Michael has collaborated with Elvis Costello on his latest album “Hey Clockface”
