Nduduzo Makathini & Hamilton De Holanda at The Appel Room

The celebrated Brazilian mandolin (bandolim) player Hamilton de Holanda and pianist-composer Nduduzo Makhathini from South Africa join forces for this transcendent musical saga. Introduced to each other by Wynton Marsalis, these master musicians created a musical bridge across the Atlantic as an antidote to the racial and cultural divisions that are all too common in the world today.

Together they explore the diaspora of African music and culture in Brazil from the time of the slave trade to the present day. In addition, they go in search of the African source of the choro, samba and boss nova in South-America, and of jazz and urban rap in North America. They find this source in the songs that were sung on plantations, a way for the slaves to tell the stories of their people and pass them down to the following generations. By going back to the source, De Holanda and Makhathini want to share these stories with their audience across the globe and beam forth a universal message of hope and connection. ...
