2nd Half
GREGOIRE MARET INVITES EDMAR CASTANEDA -
One of the world's most sought after Harmonica players, GREGOIRE MARET,honed his craft over the years developing his own unique pan-global sound and a versatile style which enables him to play effortlessly across different musical genres. He is often compared to legends Toots Thielemans and Stevie Wonder and has been sought out to play with an incredible number of musical greats including Youssn’Dour, Pete Seeger, David Sanborn, George Benson, Reggie Workman, Charles Tolliver, Charles Fambrough, Patato Valdez, Max Roach, Tito Puente, Duke Ellington Orchestra as well as Elton John and Sting among many others.
Called “almost a world unto himself” by the New York Times the master of Colombian harp, EDMAR CASTANEDA,has quite literally taken New York and the world stage by storm with the sheer force of his virtuosic command of the harp — revolutionizing the way audiences and critics alike consider an instrument commonly relegated to the “unusual category”. Edmar is a master at realizing beautiful complexities of time, while skillfully drawing out lush colors and dynamic spirit.
MICHELE ROSEWOMAN'S NEW YOR-UBA - Michele Rosewoman, a vanguard and pioneering artist in her field, mines acoustic modern jazz, sophisticated funk, dynamic electric fusion and elements of Cuban folkloric music, to create a distinct musical experience. Her command and rich vocabulary elegantly expands the horizons and boundaries of jazz while remaining firmly rooted in tradition. With a more than 30-year history, Rosewoman stands out in her class as a visionary pianist, composer bandleader and gifted performer. At Pangea Jazz Fest Michele Rosewoman will be appearing with her New Yor-Uba ensemble, featuring fellow masters from the worlds of contemporary jazz and Cuban folkloric music. The name "New Yor-Uba" reflects the progression of the music of the ancient Yoruba people from Nigeria, through Cuba to present day New York.
SLAVIC SOUL PARTY - Throbbing funk grooves, fiery Balkan brass, Gypsy accordion wizardry, and virtuoso jazz chops make Slavic Soul Party! NYC’s official #1 brass band for BalkanSoul GypsyFunk. SSP! has created an acoustic mash-up of Balkan and Gypsy sounds with North American music, weaving the gospel, techno, funk, dub, jazz, and Latin influences of New York’s neighborhoods seamlessly into a Balkan brass setting. SSP!’s music has won the ear of fans and musicians on both sides of the Atlantic, and their tunes have been learned by Serbian brass stars Boban Markovic Orkestar and New Orleans funk sensations Galactic, among others. In addition to touring throughout the US and Europe, SSP! At Pangea Jazz Fest Slavic Soul Party! will present re-imagination of Duke Ellington's iconic Far East Suite as an East European brass band discovering an exotic American sound, reversing the "exotic tinge" and reveling in this subtle, funky, and brilliant music. Ellington's suite serves as a perfect foil for SSP!'s blend of East European, Romani, and American sounds. An album of this projects is months away from a release.
ORAN ETKIN'S KELENIA - Oran Ektin has been described as a "great clarinet player" and "an excellent improviser" by the New York Times music critic Ben Ratliff and a "composer of eminent individuality" by his mentor and teacher, the legendary Yusef Lateef. Etkin's unique sound on the sax, clarinet and bass-clarinet emanates from an openness to discovery in the world, in himself and within his music. The Irish Times observed that "Oran Etkin is a musician with his ears wide open, absorbing influences from West Africa, the Far East and Europe... this is world music in the true sense, not a lazy hybrid but a personal sound born out of deep respect for diverse musical traditions." Since first forming Kelenia in 2003, Oran and the band's other original members have developed an almost telepathic connection that transcends nationality and genre to create music that is free and spontaneous enough to go into uncharted territories, and at the same time speak honestly from the heart.
PANAGIOTIS ANDEREOU JAM TRIO (with special guests) - Greek-born bass player Panagiotis Andreou belongs to dynamic group of New York creative musicians redefining the contemporary music scene. A sonic alchemist, he is transforming electronic jazz, Latin and Balkan music through cross-fertilization, freely mixing heavy doses of funk, dazzling vocal improvisations and rhythmic variety across traditional genre boundaries. Al Di Meola calls Panagiotis a “rarity that the music world here needs in his ethnic knowledge and musical diversity!” His remarkable ability to integrate an Eastern European/Balkan harmonic and rhythmic sensibility with the funky polyrhythms of Afro-Cuban music and global jazz is unparalleled.
