Drummer Chris Stromquist (of Balkan punk band Kultur Shock, and New York's legendary Slavic Soul Party) debuts his RASKOLNIKOV project at Nublu during the month of May. Throughout the month Raskolnikov will interpret the impossibly-complex-yet-entrancing music of Lebanese oud virtuoso Rabih Abou-Khalil. The band uses Abou-Khalil's neo-traditional compositions for oud as a vehicle for exploring the fertile nexus between jazz, Balkan Brass and traditional Arabic music, incorporating elements of Gnawa, Flamenco, and Cuban music along the way. Raskolnikov will play four consecutive Wednesdays in May at Nublu ahead of entering the studio to record their debut album.
